Call For Queensland Civil Rights , c1977-1978.
Colour screenprint, date amended in ink lower right, 72 x 44.5cm. Repaired corners and tears to edges, minor discolouration to lower portion. Linen-backed.
Text continues '''You can shout yourself hoarse in the square. Don't bother applying for a march permit, you won't get one. That's government policy.' - Bjelke-Petersen, 5th Sept. '77. Call for Queensland civil rights, Nov. 11.''
In 1978, Joh Bjelke-Petersen, then-Premier of Queensland, banned all street marches, which led to violent clashes between police and protesters. Tensions rose as the year progressed, and the biggest protest march was held in December, "when 346 people were arrested and packed like sardines into cells, often being denied a lawyer." Ref: The Australian, 1.1.2009.
